the guidance system. The types of steering commands vary depending on the phase of flight and the type of interceptor. For example, in the boost phase the flight control system may be designed to force the missile to track a desired flight-path angle or attitude. In the midcourse and terminal phases the system may be designed to track acceleration commands to effect an intercept of the target. This article explores several aspects of the missile flight control system, including its role in the overall missile system, its subsystems, types of flight control systems, design objectives, and design challenges. Also discussed are some of APL’s contributions to the field, which have come primarily through our role as Technical Direction Agent on a variety of Navy missile programs. he flight control system is a key element that allows the missile to meet its system performance requirements. The objective of the flight control system is to force the missile to achieve the steering commands developed by

Integrated fuzzy guidance law for high maneuvering targets based on proportional navigation guidance

An integrated fuzzy guidance (IFG) law for a surface to air homing missile is introduced. The introduced approach is a modification of the well-known proportional navigation guidance (PNG) law. The IFG law enables the missile to approach a high maneuvering target while trying to minimize control effort as well as miss-distance in a two-stage flight. In the first stage, while the missile is far ...

Adaptive Fusion of Inertial Navigation System and Tracking Radar Data

Against the range-dependent accuracy of the tracking radar measurements including range, elevation and bearing angles, a new hybrid adaptive Kalman filter is proposed to enhance the performance of the radar aided strapdown inertial navigation system (INS/Radar). This filter involves the concept of residual-based adaptive estimation and adaptive fading Kalman filter and tunes dynamically the fil...

Stability Proof of Gain-Scheduling Controller for Skid-to-Turn Missile Using Kharitonov Theorem

Gain scheduling is one of the most popular nonlinear control design approaches which has been widely and successfully applied in fields ranging from aerospace to process control. Despite the wide application of gain scheduling controllers, there is a notable lack of analysis on the stability of these controllers. The most common application of these kinds of controllers is in the field of fligh...

Nonlinear Discrete-time Design Methods for Missile Flight Control Systems

Discrete-time designs of flight control systems are required for implementation on missile-borne computers. While extensive literature is available on linear discrete-time control system design methods, nonlinear discrete-time control system design techniques have not been discussed to the same degree. This paper presents three nonlinear, discretetime control system design methods. These are th...

A Generic Approach to Missile Autopilot Design Using State-Dependent Nonlinear Control

The fundamental objective of autopilot design for missile systems is to provide stability with satisfactory performance and robustness over the whole range of flight conditions throughout the entire flight envelope that missiles are required to operate in, during all probable engagements. Depending on the control mode (skid-to-turn or bank-to-turn), intercept scenario (such as surface to surfac...
